The month of October has been declared Mental Health Awareness month with the objective of not only educating the public about mental health but also to reduce the stigma and discrimination that people with mental illness are often subjected to.
450 million people worldwide are currently living with a mental illness, yet nearly two thirds of people with a known mental illness never seek treatment.
Mental illness includes those living with anxiety, depression, and co-occurring disorders.
Both they and their loved ones need to be made aware that they need to find treatment, support, and resources to better their mental health.
These conditions cause the effects of suffering from mental or neurological disorders or from psychosocial problems.
These include disorders related to alcohol and drug abuse.
Like physical disorders mental and brain disorders vary in severity. There are those that are:
Transient (like an acute stress disorder)
Periodic (like bipolar disorder, characterised by periods of exaggerated elation followed by periods of depression)
Long lasting and progressive (like Alzheimer’s disease)
Other conditions include:
Schizophrenia
Dementia,
Depressive disorder
Obsessive compulsive disorder
Panic disorder
Post traumatic stress disorder
This October, SACRA breaks the stigma associated with Mental illness and encourages you to help us #breakthestigma associated with mental health disorders by helping to correctly diagnose the help required for ourselves and for around us.
